Father/Daughter Artists Honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The father/daughter local artist team of Albert McCurdy and his daughter, Jessie McCurdy, have created poignant and tranquil art which honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and they didn't even know they were doing so. Albert McCurdy, gaining increasing interest for his root sculptures, exhibited at The C Gallery in Los Alamos, has crafted a dancing woman from a 75-year old rose bush root. The root bends from the shoulder, swirling around the figure, exuding a sense of movement and joy. A breast cancer survivor, Sharon Williamson, who is also an art student at The C Gallery classes for adult women, saw the beautiful sculpture after class one morning, and was quick to notice that the beautiful dancer had only one breast. Touched by the cathartic experience, Sharon has gone on to write a poignant story about the sculpture, and about the artist, and the convergence of their meeting at the very moment that Sharon was captivated by the beauty and power of the anything but disfigured "Dancing Rose." It was tearful, yet full of joy. Albert didn't intend to create a Breast Cancer Awareness statement in his sculpture, but obviously sees how it empowers breast cancer survivors. He has been touched by the written piece and described it as "sensitive and personal. I am blown away." Williamson intends to submit it to various Breast Cancer publications with images of the "Dancing Rose" sculpture.
McCurdy's daughter, Jessie, an honors art student at Santa Ynez High School, has created a collection of hand-painted watercolors in a greeting card format. The card currently on display at The C Gallery is of a blooming rose with several buds. The painted image is mounted on pink card stock with a pink satin ribbon through the backing, creating the iconic pink ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness. Delicate in its painting technique, hopeful in the content of the rose buds, and complete with a heavy stock pink envelope, the cards were actually created for an International Baccalaureate Honors Art assignment in the spring of 2008, while Jessie was in C Gallery Director Rohde's class at the high school. Little did she know at the time that a breast cancer survivor would claim the card as a symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Unknowingly, both father and daughter artists have, in their artwork, honored all the women, all the walkers, all those survivors, this month of October, heralded as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Whether you are a breast cancer survivor or not, the artwork is beautiful and poignant. It is exhibited at The C Gallery in Los Alamos.
